There was evening, and there was morning…

Have you ever, when still a teen living with your parents, wished that you could be in charge for a day?  Oh the things you would do differently, oh how much better everything would be.  Because, of course, teenagers are so much better at doing things.  I mean, lets face it, we see all the flaws in our parents, and just know that we can do better.

Well, this opportunity arrived for me (albeit limited).  My mom and closest sister are at the beach for a speech competition with NCFCA (National Christian Forensics and Communications Association).

My mom’s parents are the official adults of the house, but to an extent I am in charge.  I know schedules, chores, bedtimes, the works.

I can take over for my mom.  I mean, come on, how hard could it really be?

REALITY CHECK!

To start off my “freedom weekend” both Beatrice AND Joanna have fevers and are complaining of earaches.

Don’t get me wrong, the sickness doesn’t freak me out.  I’m not a germaphobe, and I’m actually a pretty good nurse.  Garlic olive oil, hot water bottle, and steaming washcloth are all good for earache.  Cool damp cloth on face and neck, tepid bath, and lots of fluid are good for fever.  And then there is the all-powerful Tylenol.  What was the world like before this wonder drug?  To be honest, I don’t really want to know.

And it’s not like I’m doing this all on my own either.  My grandmother is here, and she’s really good with sickies.  Rocking, reading stories, and the BEST chicken soup you’ve ever tasted.

But even with all this experience and know-how, nothing (and I mean nothing) can replace “mommy magic” when you aren’t feeling well!

Now we come to the middle children – Emma, Isaiah, and Wilson.  Seeing as Grandmother and I are occupied with sick ones and cooking, and Granddaddy is busy fixing things around the house, they have taken advantage.  Every opportunity they can find they try to get in front of the tv, the computer, or the Nintendo DS.  Good kids- yes.  Normal kids that love screens- also yes.  At least we’ve got them cleaning up the kitchen after every meal and outside as much as possible.

Last night, my realization of all that mom does, came to a dramatic peak.  I had decided to sleep with Joanna and Beatrice in my mom’s bed to keep an eye on them and comfort them if they started looking for her in the middle of the night.  Sleeping with two toddlers.  How hard can it be?

REALITY CHECK!

Turns out, also not as easy as previously thought.  Sure they’re so nice and warm and cuddly at first, but they also move.  A lot.

Every time Joanna would cough I would jump to attention, prepared for her to be throwing up (she’d gone to bed with an upset tummy).

Every time one of them would roll over, I would be awake, making sure they weren’t getting out of bed looking for Mom.

And then they and the dog ganged up on me.

We have a little fox terrier/dachshund mix, and she is really a sweet dog.  But if you’ve ever seen a fox terrier before, you’ll know that they like to burrow when they sleep.

Sometime around 2 in the morning Peanut started trying to burrow up under my legs.  About that same time, Bea and Jo started shoving their hands and feet up under my back.  I guess they were warm and comfy that way, but I was terrified that I’d break someone’s arm.  So I’d shove the dog to the bottom of the bed, push Joanna to the left, and Beatrice to the right.

This cycle continued to repeat, and by 4 in the morning, I was exhausted and about ready to cry.

Just then Beatrice rolled toward me, whimpering for Mom.  I rubbed her back and told her that Nanny had her, and everything was going to be okay.  She then wrapped her little chubby arms around my neck, buried her face in my hair, and went back to sleep.

That moment made everything worth it.

So, yeah, yesterday was hard, today was hard, and tomorrow probably will be too.  Kids will fuss, things will get messy, people will get mad, and at least one thing will go wrong.

Being a mom is hard.  But I can see why they do what they do.  There is no other job on earth more difficult or more rewarding.

And to all the moms out there – may God bless and keep you!  And most of all give you strength.

In Christ,

THE GREATEST NEWS ON EARTH!

Okay, guess what?

I just got the GREATEST NEWS ON EARTH!

I mean seriously, this is awesome.

Are you ready for it?

I JUST WON THE LOTTERY FOR 6.2 MILLION DOLLORS!!!!!!

First thing I’m doing – buying my mom a diamond necklace.  Like, a HUGE one.

Next, I’m getting ALL my siblings their own laptops.

After that, I’m renting out Disney Land for a whole week, and you ARE ALL INVITED TO COME AND JOIN ME THERE!!!

TELL YOUR FRIENDS!  HAVE THEM TELL THEIR FRIENDS!

THIS IS THE BEST NEWS EVER!!!!!!!

Okay, so I didn’t really win the lottery.  But wouldn’t it be cool if I did?  I would be telling EVERYONE I know.  And they would be telling everyone THEY know.  Because, like, wouldn’t that be the coolest thing ever?

So, while I’m at it, let me give you another scenario.  You walk into your house and find your boyfriend kissing your arch nemesis.  Talk about the biggest cheat in the world!  You’re so angry, that without thinking, you grab the butcher knife sitting on the counter and stab them both!

Of course the police find you hiding out at your mom’s house and haul you off to jail.  Found guilty of two counts of murder in the first degree, you have been given a death sentence, with only one day left to live.

Sitting in your jail cell all alone, one of the guards comes and tells you that you have a visitor.  This guy comes in, and as soon as you see him, you want to tell him EVERYTHING that you’ve EVER done wrong.  You want to tell him how sorry you are that you killed those two people, because he looks like the kind of guy that could forgive you for anything.  But you’re still going to die.  There’s nothing he can do about that.

Then he comes and sits next to you and says “You know, I’m going to take your place and die for what you did.  All you have to do is say that you’ll let me.”

WHAT IN THE WORLD??????  DID THIS DUDE JUST SAY THAT HE WOULD DIE FOR YOU???  YOU WOULD BE CRAZY TO TURN DOWN AN OFFER LIKE THAT!!!!!!!

Thing is, this isn’t just a fun story.  We’ve ALL done HORRIBLE things, but One Person DIED, to take our places, and if we’d just accept that gift, we’d get to live FOREVER in the most AWESOME place anyone could EVER imagine (like Disney World, but BETTER!).

SO WHY AREN’T WE TELLING EVERYONE WE KNOW ABOUT THIS?????  WHY AREN’T WE SCREAMING IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS!

I WON THE LOTTERY BUT BETTER!!!!!!

JESUS CHRIST LAID DOWN HIS LIFE SO THAT I DON’T HAVE TO BE ON DEATH ROW!  I CAN GO AND LIVE FOREVER IN A PLACE SO AWESOME, WE CAN’T EVEN START TO DREAM OF WHAT IT WILL BE LIKE!

And yet we who have already heard this great news and have accepted it as our own aren’t sharing it.  Heck, we’re not even sharing it with our FRIENDS AND FAMILY!  We should be telling EVERYONE we see on the streets!  Did you hear the great news?!?!?!?  JESUS DIED SO WE DON’T HAVE TO!  ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS ACCEPT THAT HE DIED AND THAT GOD BROUGHT HIM BACK TO LIFE, AND WE’RE ALL GOING TO HEAVEN!

So why aren’t we screaming this from the mountain tops?  Are we afraid?  Scared of being judged?  Scared of offending people?  THEY’RE ALREADY GOING TO HELL!!!  What are we going to do?  Offend them into second hell???

Are people going to be angry at me for writing this?  YES!  Will people say nasty and hurtful things about me?  Probably.  I mean, I’m being so politically incorrect.  I said that people are going to hell!  I wouldn’t be surprised if my comments fill with horrible things about me (and my mom).

But you know what?  I DON’T CARE.  I DON’T CARE!!

You can say whatever you want about me.  YOU CAN EVEN THROW ME IN PRISON AND TORTURE OR KILL ME!  Because there would be no greater honor than to die for my Lord, the Risen Jesus Christ.  And I know that whatever happens as a result of me obeying the greatest command ever given, HE will be there with me through it all.

And if the Holy Spirit ever causes you to come into the Family because of something I said or did, then, well, I guess I’ll see you in Heaven.

LORD JESUS, TAKE THIS MESSAGE, TAKE MY HEART, TAKE MY LIFE.  DO WHATEVER YOU WILL WITH THEM.  FOR I AM YOURS AND YOURS ALONE.

So.

Have you heard the great news?
