NCFCA Persuasive – Take Action Against Abortion

As many of you know (or are about to find out), I participate in speech competitions through NCFCA (National Christian Forensics and Communications Association).

This year I am competing in Duo Interperative (a story for another day), and Persuasive.  As of now I have the speech written and am in the process of memorizing/perfecting.  I have been asked several times to share it with you, so HERE IT IS!  It is in the format required by NCFCA.  Hope that doesn’t bother you!

Without further ado:

Persuasive Speech: Take Action Against Abortion

There once was an old church in Nazi Germany.  It was built right by a train track, and every Sunday a freight train would rumble past during their service.  When the Nazi occupation was complete the trains began carrying a horrifying cargo – Jews destined for concentration camps.  These hopeless people would see the church as they passed and would cry out for help.  An old man who attended the church at the time gave this account:

We decided the only way to keep from being so disturbed by the cries was to start singing our hymns. By the time that train came rumbling past, we were singing at the top of our voices. If some of the screams reached our ears, we’d just sing a little louder until we could hear them no more (

We can look at people of the past and ask how they stood by and watched the holocaust happen.  Yet we are no better.  The holocaust of abortion is here.  Since Roe v. Wade in 1973 there have been over 54 million babies murdered by abortion in the United States (

I’m not here to convince you that abortion is wrong.  I’m here to say that now is the time to step up and take action against the murder of unborn babies.  First I will show that the majority of Christians have fallen into complacency regarding abortion and challenge you to take a stand.  Second, I will reveal who our true enemy is in this battle.  Finally, I’ll explain what you can do personally to take up the fight against this holocaust.

First, why is this something you should care about?  I know, I know.  Abortion.  The ‘hot topic’ issue for 40 years, and one that’s begun to wear a little thin.  We’ve all heard it a million times!  So why this topic?  A study done by Gallup showed that 78% of adult Americans identified themselves as Christians (  Yet a survey taken by the Barna Group has shown that only 19% of all Americans are passionately pro-life and dedicated to fighting against the death of unborn babies (

This means that, of all Americans that declare themselves to be followers of Christ, over three quarters have done nothing about the holocaust of abortion.  These people have watched the movies, attended the sermons, heard the speeches, and yet they choose to ignore the call.  If it was toddlers being slaughtered in these clinics would the Church sit by and watch it happen?

This speech is not a plea for women to save their babies.  It is a call for you to stand up, and take on that fight yourself.  So, before you zone out and write it off as another abortion speech, I ask you – are you a part of the small number of people who have taken a stand?  Or are you a member of the group who embrace complacency on the excuse that the topic is ‘overdone’?  More importantly, which group will you be a part of going forward?

The need for strong Christians ministering life and light in the face of death and darkness is critical.  As the fight continues to drag on, many of us have grown weary of this battle and shifted our focus to other issues and pleasures.  But we cannot stop fighting for the hearts and lives of those deceived by the lie ‘pro-choice’ until we have victory over this holocaust.  Consider the words of Hebrews 12:1, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (NIV, Hebrews 12:1).

Second, what is the real backbone of abortion?  Who should we be blaming and fighting against with everything we’ve got?  Many would say that the ‘pro-choice’ liberals are the evil dragging our country down, that we have to vote them out.  This is true to an extent.  According to President Obama has affirmed that he is ‘pro-choice’ and blatantly supports abortion (

Yet while President Obama and other leaders of our nation may be promoting and aggravating this issue, they are not the root evil.  No, it goes much deeper than that.  Speaking to the Pharisees about Satan in John 8:44 Jesus said this, “…He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him.  When he lies, he speaks in his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (NIV, John 8:44).  Satan has spun the deception that it’s okay for parents to murder their unborn children, that it’s a “choice” acceptable for them to make.

I had the opportunity to minister from the sidewalk outside an abortion clinic, and while there I saw a young girl so tangled in the lies of Satan she was prepared to kill her almost 20 week old baby.  She was just my age.  We tried to convince her to change her mind about aborting, or at least talk to us about her decision, but she refused.  One of the members of the ministry I was with called out “So you’re going through with it then?”  The girl turned and looked at us and nodded her head yes.  Her expression was not one of malice or cruelty.  It was one of extreme pain, sadness, and loss.  She was broken.

This girl could not be saved through politics.  The only way for her and all of these mothers to find hope is in Jesus Christ.  As followers of Christ we are called to shine the Light of God’s Truth in the midst of darkness.  God tells us in Isaiah 42: 6-7, “I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness…  I will…make you to be a…light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness” (NIV, Isaiah 42:6-7).

This fight is not just political.  This is a spiritual battle.  It is important for us to vote for pro-life candidates and fight as hard as we can to make the murder of innocent babies illegal.  But it doesn’t end there.  As it says in Ephesians 6:12, “This is not a struggle with flesh and blood but against the powers of this dark world and the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (NIV, Ephesians 6:12).

Finally, what can we do personally to end this holocaust?  The first thing you can do is pray.  Pray for the Mommas considering abortion, and for the friends and family supporting them.  Pray that the Holy Spirit will soften their hearts; that they’ll turn from sin, and be led to Christ.  Pray for the abortion doctors and nurses to see the horror they’ve committed and turn to God.  And pray that strength will be given to Christians actively fighting for life.

Next, give support to local Pregnancy Care Centers.  Pregnancy Care Centers offer practical support to women in addition to presenting the Gospel of Hope.  Find a Care Center near you.  Pray for their ministry, help them raise money, or volunteer your time to work with them (

But the most important thing you can do in this fight is to share the love of Christ by ministering to women considering abortion.  Sidewalks4Life is a nationwide Christian organization that is teaching the Church how to minister this love.  They say,

In 40 years we have seen 54 million casualties of war.  But this war is not being waged on foreign soil.  It is fought here, in our cities, taking the lives of our unborn children, murdered through abortion.  But now, we are asking people like you to stand up for life.  To take the gospel to the darkest corners of your city.  To speak hope into the lives of women.  We will show you how to put your feet on the sidewalks ( ).

Sidewalks4Life gives you the resources you need to start ministering from the sidewalk outside your local abortion mill, connecting you with ministries already in your area.

Every time a woman is taken to have an abortion, the momma and the people supporting her are at a crossroads.  They have only a few minutes to make the final decision, life or death?  So that is where we’ll meet them!  Standing on sidewalks outside abortion clinics is our last line of defense in saving the lives of these babies.  But it’s not just the babies we’re trying to save.  It’s the mothers and fathers who are left scarred, carrying the guilt and blood of murder with them.  Here we have a chance to offer truth and salvation to them.

In John 10:10 Jesus gives us a clear picture of this fight, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (NIV, John 10:10).  This is how we know the Gospel is the only solution for abortion.  Abortion stands for death, but Christ stands for life.

Now it’s up to you.  First, we have seen that over three quarters of professing Christians are not taking a part in this fight against death.  Will you stand with the majority who do nothing?  Or will you fight for life?  Secondly, we see that the deeper evil behind this murder is not political, it’s spiritual.  It is our job as Christians to shine the Light of God’s truth on the deception that murder by abortion is a “choice”.  And finally, you know how to take action.  Pray in the Spirit for the salvation of lost mommas and daddies, and for the strength of Christians standing up.  Support your local Pregnancy Care Centers.  Join Sidewalks4Life and their members in ministering to women outside of abortion clinics.  In the words of 1 John 3:18, “Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth” (NIV, 1 John 3:18).

After hearing the story of the old man in the beginning of the speech, pro-life speaker Penny Lea wrote this in her blog about American Christians:

We gather together each week and shut ourselves inside our buildings…all in the name of God.  And yet, in the heavenly realm, our voices raised in praise are drowned out by screams of agony from millions of babies who are…executed before they are born…  Years from now will you be like that old man trying to explain your apathy as millions were led away to slaughter in abortion clinics? Or will you raise your voice and cry out in protest for those who have no voice (!

The choice is yours.
